Taverners NT help women and girls have a ball

Taverners NT are helping clubs in the Territory to gear up for the cricket season by donating 50 cricket balls to teams playing in women’s competitions.

The move to support local cricket clubs across the Territory comes as women and girls take to cricket in record numbers in the Darwin & Districts Cricket Competition, with the women’s competition set to increase to six teams in 2021.

In addition to supporting clubs in the Top End, Taverners NT are also donating cricket balls to teams competing in the Alice Springs Cricket Association’s women’s competition to assist players with their preparation for the 2021/22 Red Centre season.

Taverners NT’s mission is giving the young and disadvantaged a sporting chance. 

Commenting on the donation, Taverners NT Chairperson Geoff Cussen said it was important that Taverners continued to support women and girls electing to pick up a bat and ball for the first time. 

“To encourage greater participation in sport, it’s important that we foster inclusive environments and remove barriers. A key part of this is ensuring appropriate equipment is available for women and girls taking up the game.

“With an increasing number of women and girls playing cricket in the Territory, we want to assist clubs with the purchase of new balls to offset costs and ensure players have access to appropriately sized equipment.

“Taverners NT are excited to support NT Cricket in fostering the growth of women’s competitions across the Territory. Our members are very passionate about giving Territorians a sporting chance and encouraging more girls to get involved in sport is a key focus area.”

With players such as Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy now household names, and following the success of the Women’s Big Bash League and Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, NT Cricket CEO Joel Morrison said it was vital to have the support of Taverners NT as the sport continued to expand locally.

 “Cricket is a sport for all and there are more opportunities than ever before for young girls across the Territory to follow in the footsteps of their heroes such as the Red Centre’s Tabatha Saville who played for the Adelaide Strikers in the WBBL.

“Women and girls are taking to the field in record numbers and the support of Taverners NT will ensure clubs and players receive the necessary support to cater for the growth of the game.”
